Authors: Dennis R. Pennington, James Willis, and Martin Primack
Average review score:

Wonderful Text, Brilliant Writing
I needed a text to teach an economics class with and searched for weeks with little satisfaction. Then I ran across this under utilized text. The writing is "brilliant" and the authors, especially Mr. Myers seem to have a very firm and realistic grasp of the essential concepts of "Economics"

Outstanding Economics Narrative
This is an outstanding economics textbook. Can be used as a quick primer on what the basics of the field are all about. I believe that the author of this book is a truly remarkable and extraordinary individual and everyone should listen to him closely.

Food Values of Portions Comonly Used - A MUST HAVE!
This comprehensive reference guide is a must have for anyone who must watch their dietary intake of any one or more of a variety of substances. In fact, it is something everyone should have on hand to help them determine what they should or should not eat if they just want to stay healthy.

It first divides various foods into sensible food group catgories making almost any food easy to find. All food items are then listed alphabetically in table format and include content such as various vitamins, minerals, water, fibre, carbohydrate, fats, sodium, caffeine, and more. It also lists certain specialty foods such as special dietary substitute foods etc. for those on very specific diets. It makes an excellent gift for diabetics, heart patients, vegetarians, and anyone with an eye on their health.

A pro-gay biblical approach; yes, he loves us!
This is a great book for the lesbian/gay population that struggles so hard with their Christian background. It is written by an author who is not homosexual and really researched her findings. This book is truly spiritually uplifting. Stuggle no more with the love of God and your sexuality. God loves each and every one of us... For GOD is good ..... ALL THE TIME!!!

Itse Selu: Cherokee Harvest Festival
Published in Paperback by Charlesbridge Publishing (April, 1994)
Authors: Daniel Pennington and Don Stewart
Average review score:

Respectful, clearly written book
A missing piece of the Native American literature. So many stories are about the removal, or the myths. But how did the Cherokee actually live? What did they eat? What kind of games did they play? This book expertly deals with these everyday issues.

It is a clearly written book with bright, graceful illustrations. I enjoyed reading it to my daughters several times. And now they are older they enjoy learning Cherokee words.

An excellent book...and one every librarian should consider having.

Lost in my history!
I was astonished to read of something that pertained to my family history. I am so amazed by Daniel Pennington's writing's. He made me feel like I was there watching this in real life. This will be a great tool to teach my children about my heritage.

A Place Apart: Monastic Prayer and Practice for Everyone
Published in Paperback by Liguori Publications (November, 1998)
Author: M. Basil Pennington
Average review score:

Joining in Spirit With Monks and Nuns
If you missed "A Place Apart" in 1983, you can come to this second edition assured that little has been changed. The publisher encouraged Fr. Pennington to issue this edition with a new introduction and photographs because of the many reader requests for a new copy of the book - their copies had begun falling apart with constant use. In "A Place Apart," Fr. Pennington makes it clear that "the call...to enter into the solitude of God, is not the exclusive prerogative of the monk." He believes that everyone who deeply feels the desire and need will find or create a place apart - a place to go with regular frequency for prayer and solitude. Each chapter describes a monastic practice that can be adapted or adopted by the layperson seeking to develop a more prayerful routine on the spiritual journey. The original "A Place Apart" grew out of several years of what Fr. Pennington calls "colloquia or monastic bull sessions" with men who came to the monastery as part of their process of vocation discernment. And the decision to publish the interesting and thought-provoking substance of those sessions was the result of his desire to respond to the many men and women who were looking for monastic values and practices to incorporate into their often very active lives. Fr. Pennington goes on to emphasize the importance of silence in the monastic life, but reminds us that although Trappists do not take a vow of silence, they do follow rules that require silence at certain times and in special places. And to us he says, "If you want the value of silence in your life you will have to find or create places of silence, you will have to agree on times of silence." When Fr. Pennington treats the subject of work and the monk, and how the layperson might adopt the monastic attitude toward work, he makes the point that although the monk "is to be conscious of his duty to cooperate with the divine creative energies in moving the creation along toward its goal," that duty is not solely "...the prerogative of monks, but the call of all Christians." In his Postword to the book, Fr. Pennington urges us to go beyond wishing to live like Christ. "We have to be eminently practical about such wishes and make them efficacious desires by practical planning and action."

Affectionately Written Work For Everyone
The vocation of being a monk is one that grows increasingly more difficult to understand for the many of us who live in the hustle and bustle of the modern world, but thanks to Father Pennington's beautiful work, monastic life becomes an inspiration to us all. Not at all intended to recruit prospective brothers, instead this book transcribes the habits of being a monk into our daily lives, so that we all may know the peace that these devoted brothers have as they pray for all of us in the rest of the world. "A Place Apart" is an inspiration for any who read it, and demonstrates effectively the necessity for silence and prayer in whatever it is we may do.

The Stories in Her Eyes
Published in Paperback by New Horizons Publications (01 September, 1995)
Authors: M. J. Pennington and Dave Bakker
Average review score:

"The Stories in Her Eyes" Outstanding
This book is without exception one of the best collections of short stories I have read. The author has used strong emotion to weave the stories together and keeps you turning the pages. I hope to see another work soon by M.J. .

The Stories in Her Eyes
Exciting, titilating, mysterious, sensuous. A real player on the "unknown" author list. A must read for anyone with sensativiy - man or woman!

"Stories" is a beautiful find
Works of fiction, and love stories in particular, are not normally my cup of tea. I do try an occasional best seller, such as "Bridges of Madison County," just to see what all the stir is about. I liked "Bridges" because I could relate to the masculine feelings expressed, although some of my friends found it quite sappy. So my expectations weren't all that great when a dear friend recommended "Stories in Her Eyes."

I've since learned a lesson - in matters of literature, forget expectations! This book is a jewel, a first creation by a person with an obvious talent for storytelling. After reading it, I sensed the deep, warm sensation of satisfying pleasure and wondering excitement that one feels in the sharing of the first tender kiss of youth. That it has not made a best-seller list makes it even more special to me, because - like first love - it becomes more precious with less public sharing, with more privacy, a greater secret.

I was quite unprepared for the passionate intimacy of "Stories," but it is presented with such softness, such charming grace, that it quickly seemed quite natural. Yet there was still almost a feeling of embarrassment in places, as though stealing a look at another person's diary - seeing passages so personal that the eyes should be averted, but cannot be. It is a woman's story, but every man who has known or dreamed true love, true human passion, will find fulfillment and better appreciation for the object of his love or dream in the reading.

Literalists will be challenged by the wild fantasies in "Stories," which, like the intimacies, quickly become accepted. Many of the stories are marvelously uninhibited - transformations into fascinatingly surreal experiences, but binding nonetheless. They are foreshadowed by the simple but haunting beauty of the front cover design, also created by the author, depicting the woman with the "Eyes." This effect is mirrored by the photograph of the author on the back cover, a mysterious woman in white, standing on a seashore, her face darkened and partly covered with blowing hair, vulnerable but inviting - if you dare. The eyes. The eyes. I almost wonder if she is real.
